Calling all youths!
Recently, the government has been requesting, and practically begging Singapore's younger generation to take a more active role in grassroot activities. Be it taking part or organizing, it doesn't matter. JUST TAKE AN INTEREST IN IT...
If you had asked me to join the grassroot's youth organization a month before, I would have told you that you must be sick in the head and I would rather spend this time watching an entertaining movie or read an interesting novel.
But after working a very short time at the community centre, I began to see for myself and have a hands-on feeling on what it feels like being part of the grassroot organization.
First thing I noticed was that there really wasn't many youths interested in these kinds of activities, so when all the grassroot leaders saw my presence, they were rather surprised and skeptical. None of them believed I went to work at the CC willingly. Some thought I was on government scholarship and was serving my bond with the grassroots. Others thought I was there for the rare and sacred CIP points. I tried very hard to explain that no one forced me coerced me into accepting this job and I joined the People's Association in my own freewill. Did they listen? Nope. They just continued believing that I was some scholar student.
Actually, I realised it was pretty fun organizing grassroot activities. The first day of work was spent at Xinmin Primary watching a racial harmony get-together party, with food and concert. There I got to meet all the grassroot GRC. In this area of work, you get to meet all sorts of people. Some were English speaking, some were chinese. Some were very friendly, while others were not so. Some were rich and some were not. Some were uncouth, while some were very well bred. You get the picture... I enjoyed the experience of meeting all these people from different walks of life.
Would I join this line in the future? I don't know. I really don't know. But I think its because of this experience that I'm currently taking an interest in politics.
POLITICS?!?
Yes, politics.
Out of the 5 modules I'm taking this semester at NUS, two are related to politics. One is Political Science while the other is Geopolitics.
What's Geopolitics? Well, its politics plus geography. Pretty interesting, I must say. I have 2 geopolitics lecturers. One is Dr Carl Warrs and the other is A/P James Sidaway. Both are excellent entertainers I must say. I manage to keep awake throughout their 3 hour lectures every week. Considering this is part geography, I'm glad to even manage to keep my eyeballs wide open.
At least they're much better than the econs lecturer. She's boring.
Anyway, I realised something strange. Out of all my SRJC classmates of 03' 2A03, I'm the only one taking Econs this semester. What happened to the rest?!? People in NUS like Andrea, Meiling, Lynette, Heather, Amanda, etc etc... all didn't take Econs... Why?!? So strange.
